CNET’s latest long-term smart-home roundup lands on a familiar failure mode: most test hardware eventually gets packed away because a house is not a demo lab.

The devices that survive are the ones that keep earning their place in an actual routine — through a useful trigger, a reliable control path, or a problem they solve faster than the app can become annoying. That is the only retention metric that matters.
The report covers 11 devices still in use after testing, spanning smart locks, lamps and security sensors. Its most useful takeaway is not a shopping list; it is a filter for avoiding a home full of stranded gadgets and decorative dashboards.
Keep the control path boring
CNET highlights Ikea’s smart plug, which supports Matter with Apple Home when a HomePod is acting as the Matter hub, while also working through Ikea’s own app. The plug is used to power a Wi-Fi router, making it possible to cut power for a reboot when a device misbehaves; restoring power still requires pressing the plug’s physical side button.
That last detail is the good kind of imperfection. The automation has a clear job, an obvious fallback, and no fantasy that a reboot loop should be fully autonomous. Before adding any plug, switch or bulb, map the recovery path: if the network, hub or cloud logic gate fails, can the device still be operated without turning troubleshooting into a scavenger hunt?
Matter support is useful here because it expands the available control surface. It is not a permission slip to ignore the vendor app, the hub requirement or the physical button. Interoperability is the payload; a usable fallback is the checksum.
Sensors should change a decision
SwitchBot’s air monitor is another example of hardware that remains useful because it creates a real feedback loop. CNET says it measures temperature, humidity and carbon-dioxide levels, lets users customise refresh times and provides alerts for dangerous air-quality levels. The sensor can be moved between rooms, and the reviewer reports a battery lasting a full year.
That is a more credible smart-home pattern than “collect every metric.” Place a sensor where it can settle an argument: bedroom comfort, kitchen conditions, or the area near a gas fireplace. Then define the action before buying it. Move an air purifier. Adjust a thermostat. Change when a fan runs. If the data does not trigger a decision, it is just another notification endpoint asking to be muted.
The same test applies to connected entertainment, where a phone, controller and display can create just as much ecosystem friction as a thermostat and hub. Check which phones and watches already work, how the lock behaves when connectivity is impaired, and whether every person who needs access has a practical route in.
The devices that remain after testing are rarely the loudest ones. They are the hardware that fits into a dependable chain: physical control, local routine, sensible alert, repeatable recovery. Everything else is just a subscription to more edge cases.
