The real story, however, is which protocols, clouds, and installers actually let your devices talk to each other without you writing glue code at 2 a.m.

Three markets, three logic gates

The US and UK reads predictable. Amazon, Google, Resideo, and ADT continue to anchor the American market, pushing AI, security, and professionally installed automation as the real differentiators. UK vendors like Hive, Drayton Wiser, Lightwave, Yale, and Loxone double down on what British homes actually need: heating curves, energy telemetry, and whole-home control that doesn't fall over when the router hiccups. If you're wiring a retrofit in either country, the automation story is largely about choosing which walled garden you can live inside — or how much glue logic you're willing to write around it.

India is the interesting payload

India is where the 2026 landscape gets genuinely noisy. The market sits at an estimated $6.71 billion with a projected 29.12% CAGR through 2031, and the local heavyweights aren't playing the same game as their Western counterparts. Havells' Crabtree brand has quietly shifted from selling smart switches to selling a complete smart-home experience, and was even the title partner for Smart Home Expo 2026 in Mumbai. Wipro plays the affordable-lighting angle, with its Next Smart Home app clearing 1 million Android downloads and more than 10,000 reviews, plus support for both Alexa and Google Home — the rare move that doesn't lock you into one ecosystem. Oakter rounds out the local field with an IoT-and-appliances focus, reporting over 500,000 monthly active users across its portfolio and running three factories with 25 production lines across 100,000+ square feet of space.

Then there's Xiaomi. As reported by Gizmochina, the company just rolled out its Mijia sub-brand in India on its 12-year anniversary, making Mijia the fourth brand alongside Xiaomi, Redmi, and Poco. The plan ties back to Xiaomi's "Human × Car × Home" strategy introduced globally in 2023, and everything will run on Xiaomi HyperOS. For anyone already inside the Xiaomi device tree, this is the moment your air purifiers, future large appliances, and existing smart TVs finally share one glue layer.

What to actually watch

A few practical levers here. If you're sizing up a premium Indian install, Schneider and Legrand are the only two with serious KNX-grade interoperability — everything else is cloud-mediated and will bend to whoever runs the server. Wipro and Oakter are the picks for retrofit-friendly, app-first setups that still respect third-party ecosystems. And if Xiaomi HyperOS actually delivers on cross-device triggers, the Mijia rollout is the first real test of whether a non-Apple, non-Google stack can own a whole household in 2026. Watch the Mijia product cadence first; the real payload isn't the air purifier, it's the large-appliance pipeline.
