Ring Upgrades Camera Privacy with New TAKE Encryption Protocol

As reported by CNN, Ring — the Amazon-owned residential camera vendor — is swapping its default cloud-storage encryption for a new protocol called TAKE, short for "throw away the key." Videos captured by Ring hardware are to be sealed in what the company describes as a user-keyed digital vault, with provider-side decryption capacity revoked by default. TAKE rolls out as the default setting on all Ring cameras in September; the platform's existing end-to-end encryption, shipped in 2021, is retained as a manual option.

Architecture and key custody

Under the new model, recorded video is encrypted in transit and at rest, then committed to a cloud vault accessible only via a key held by the account owner. Server-side features requiring content access — principally AI-driven video search — are executed through ephemeral, customer-approved key unlocks. Once the feature completes, the temporary key is discarded, and Ring states it retains no persistent decryption capability.

Ring positions TAKE as offering comparable confidentiality to end-to-end encryption while preserving the multi-device and shared-user configurations that E2EE historically disrupted. The 2021 E2EE rollout forced users to disable shared access and certain Alexa integrations; TAKE, by contrast, keeps those convenience layers intact while relocating the trust boundary to the end user.

Residual attack surface

Key custody is not the same as access control. TAKE does not address voluntary footage disclosure through the Neighbors app, through which Ring customers can still hand clips to law enforcement on request. The company does not claim otherwise; TAKE is a cryptographic upgrade, not a policy one. Earlier in 2026, Ring terminated a partnership with Flock following backlash over a Super Bowl advertisement promoting a lost-dog feature. Separately this month, Flock itself introduced new police auditing and accountability controls — an indication that vendor-side trust assumptions are being contested industry-wide, not just at Ring.

Verdict

For existing Ring customers, TAKE is a passive upgrade — enabled by default, no configuration required. Cryptographic architecture is plausible, and default-on encryption materially reduces the historical exposure window of stored footage. New buyers, however, should not interpret TAKE as a privacy panacea: camera placement, Neighbors app opt-ins, and local recording options remain the levers with greater impact on actual residential surveillance footprint than any cloud-side key rotation scheme. Net assessment: ship it for installed base; continue due diligence before new procurement.
