Homey Pro and Mini Achieve Official Matter 1.5 Certification

Athom has confirmed that Homey Pro, Homey Pro mini, and the Homey Self-Hosted Server have cleared Matter 1.5 certification through the Connectivity Standards Alliance — the same body that validates Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa implementations, according to the company's announcement.

Scope of the certification

Both Pro and Pro mini units ship with an integrated Thread Border Router, so Matter-over-Thread commissioning requires no additional infrastructure. Self-hosted deployments still depend on a separate Thread Border Router on the network, with devices added through the Homey Mobile App.

Matter 1.5 extends the specification into device categories that were previously absent or underspecified — notably EV chargers and heat pumps. Homey's implementation also relies on its Matter Bridge app to expose non-Matter accessories to Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and Home Assistant. In operational terms, Zigbee and proprietary 433 MHz peripherals already paired to Homey can now surface as Matter entities to external controllers without per-device re-pairing.

Aqara's parallel Power Plug H2 launch — UK and EU variants — combines Matter over Thread and Zigbee on a single device, with 13A (UK) or 16A (EU) switching capacity, energy monitoring, and an RGB status indicator on the higher-tier model. The plug functions as either a Thread router or a Zigbee router depending on the selected mode. RGB energy visualisation requires Zigbee mode and an Aqara hub; Matter-over-Thread mode exposes basic switching and metering only. Feature partitioning across protocols remains consistent with how prior dual-protocol devices have behaved.

What the certification does not guarantee

Certification validates protocol conformance, not feature parity. Buyers should verify at commissioning whether specific device types — particularly EV chargers and heat pumps — expose the full control cluster set on Homey, or only baseline on/off and metering interfaces. Bridging throughput via the Matter Bridge app is governed by local polling intervals and hub processing capacity, neither of which the CSA tests. Until independent latency and stress benchmarks are published, treat the "expanded compatibility" claim as a contractual statement, not a measured result.

Separately, the Open Home Foundation has opened a public preview of its community-maintained device database. For users validating pre-purchase whether a device behaves as advertised under Matter 1.5, that resource may prove more diagnostic than vendor datasheets.

Verdict for current Homey owners: the update is free and the Thread Border Router integration removes a known commissioning friction point — adopt it. Verdict for buyers evaluating hubs strictly on Matter version coverage: certification is now confirmed, but the practical delta over Matter 1.3 hubs depends on which EV charger or heat pump vendors ship compliant firmware, and that data is not yet available.
