PC Mag's Will Greenwald and John R. Delaney called it "a top pick for anyone shopping for a smart thermostat on a budget," with the unspoken asterisk that your ceiling is Google Assistant.

Ecobee's Premium at $259.99 flips the equation: SmartSensor, air-quality monitor, built-in Alexa and Siri support, and a Bluetooth speaker that CNET's Jon Reed admitted was "half-decent." That's a lot of triggers running through one device. The Smart Thermostat Enhanced at $199.99 drops the speaker and the air quality monitor, which is the real config sweet spot for anyone who already owns proper audio.

The Mysa escape hatch

Mysa pitches itself as the value pick with a privacy angle, which in automation-speak means it refuses to gate basic climate control behind a cloud account. If you run Home Assistant, Node-RED, or a local MQTT broker, that's the only spec that actually matters. No vendor lock-in, no webhook disappearing when a product team gets cut.

The broader market tells you where the rest of the industry is heading. One projection circulating via openPR puts the smart thermostat segment at USD 34.2 billion by 2036, while EIN News reports USD 26.83 billion by 2035 at a 16.2% CAGR. Either number is enough to confirm that more walled gardens are coming, not fewer.

The actual wiring decision

Before you pull out a credit card, sketch your existing triggers. A thermostat is a temperature-controlled relay on your HVAC line, and the right one is the one with the cleanest local API or the most reliable webhook into your automation engine. Ecobee wins on sensor density and protocol breadth, Nest wins if you've already conceded your home to Google, and Mysa wins if you insist on owning your own furnace. Pick the hub first, then match the thermostat to it — otherwise you'll spend the next year duct-taping three apps together just to turn the heat down at midnight.
