For smart home integrators and buyers evaluating cellular-backed security hardware, that trajectory is less a marketing promise than a forcing function: the radio access layer is consolidating faster than consumer device firmware cycles can absorb.

The vendor stack is tightening

Ericsson led the 5G IoT market with over 11% share in 2025. The top five vendors — Huawei, Ericsson, Qualcomm, Cisco, and Samsung — collectively controlled 46.5% of the market. Roughly half of all spending on 5G IoT infrastructure now flows through five firms. That concentration has direct downstream consequences: modem reference designs, chipset roadmaps, and operator certification paths are dictated by a small number of RF front-end vendors. Any smart home hub, alarm panel, or security gateway built on 5G NR is, in practice, tethered to Qualcomm's modem cadence and Ericsson's RAN feature release calendar. Procurement teams building on the protocol should weight vendor lock-in the same way they would on a Layer 3 switch refresh.

The connectivity substrate is operational

Ericsson reports that global 5G subscriptions crossed the 2 billion mark by 2025. Cellular IoT broadband connections cleared 2 billion in Q3, while fixed wireless and cable broadband combined reached approximately 2.6 billion — up from 1.4 billion at the end of 2021. The transport layer this forecast assumes is not speculative; it is live. GSMA projects more than 30 billion IoT connections to smart infrastructure, industrial automation, and connected assets by 2030. GSA data indicates over 1,600 organizations had deployed or planned private mobile networks by 2025, with manufacturing as the primary adopter. Private 5G has exited pilot status; it is now the default deployment model for sites requiring deterministic latency outside the public RAN.

What to verify before committing to 5G IoT hardware

The single practical inflection point for the residential segment is RedCap. The 5G NR-Light variant is engineered for low-cost industrial sensors and wearables — the same power, size, and cost envelope that battery-operated smart home sensors, leak detectors, and peripheral security nodes occupy. If RedCap modules reach price parity with current LTE Cat-1 bis parts within the next 18 months, the throughput headroom and security upgrade path will justify a swap. Until that happens, 5G IoT remains predominantly an industrial and enterprise story.

Verdict for the smart home buyer: skip 5G IoT modules in current-generation gear unless the device explicitly supports RedCap or operates as a fixed wireless failover. The market is real. The protocol economics for the living room are not yet.
